AN ANCIENT TECHNIQUE BORROWED FROM THE NEAR EAST

The year was 2019, and that summer changed the trajectory of the company as I knew it.

I was contacted by a Canadian distributor of Topciment, a microcement product, who was reaching out to some of Toronto’s more notable painting and decorating companies. They were looking for a local installer capable of producing finishes using cement-based coatings. Fortunately, I had a master craftsman on my team with years of experience working with Venetian plaster — so I took the appointment with that confidence in mind.

The young couple who commissioned this installation had roots in Dubai. They were determined to complete the project before starting a family and having their in-laws move into the basement of their bungalow. I think we made a good first impression — I was transparent in sharing that this would be our first top-to-bottom microcement installation, and they agreed to take a chance on us.

  • Technically, the project wasn’t all that different from a curbless bathroom renovation. We needed to ensure the floor was properly sloped for drainage, waterproof all wet areas at seams and edges, and reinforce the floors and walls with fibreglass mesh.

Here’s how the project came together:

    • Produced five distinct finish samples featuring various colours and textures

    • Selective demolition of pre-identified elements

    • Sistered floor joists to eliminate bounce and ensure structural integrity

    • Installed ⅝" plywood over the subfloor, accounting for the 5mm thickness of the microcement system, to create a level transition between the bathroom and the adjoining room

    • Installed metal corner beads at floor-to-wall joints, wall corners, and shower bench edges

    • Skim coated high and low spots in the existing drywall with CGC compound to achieve a Level 5 flat surface

    • Supplied and installed CGC Mould Tough drywall in wet areas

    • Rough-in Electrical: installed boxes, wires, and cables

    • Rough-in Plumbing: installed lines and vents

    • Waterproofed wet areas with Schluter Kerdi membrane

    • Framed the shower base and window ledge to a 3% slope for proper water drainage

    • Installed fibreglass mesh to reinforce floors and walls

    • Applied the microcement system: base coat + 2 top coats on walls, floors, ceilings, and the master bathroom vanity countertop and side gable

    • Applied a protective water-based polyurethane varnish as a waterproof sealer

    • Trim-out Electrical: installed heated towel racks, outlets, switches, wall sconces, pot lights, and undermount vanity lighting

    • Trim-out Plumbing: installed linear shower drain, shower head, valves, faucets, vanities, sinks, and toilets

    • Rough Carpentry: built the master bathroom vanity carcass (box and drawers)

    • Finish Carpentry: mounted doors and hardware, installed supply registers, and mounted mirrors
